Frequently Asked Questions

Therapy FAQs

  • Therapy gives us a remarkable opportunity to engage in conversations about the matters that truly matter to us. A therapist is a licensed, skilled, compassionate guide by your side, helping you navigate your present challenges and equipping you with tools to face challenges ahead. Therapy can focus on a single issue or address multiple concerns.

  • Determining if you need therapy is a personal decision, but some signs may indicate it could be beneficial for you:

    • Persistent emotional distress: If you're experiencing intense or prolonged feelings of sadness, anxiety, anger, or hopelessness that affect your daily life, relationships, or overall well-being, therapy can help you explore and manage these emotions.

    • Difficulty coping with life changes: If you're struggling to navigate significant life events, such as divorce, job loss, or major transitions, therapy can provide support and guidance during these challenging times.

    • Relationship problems: If you're facing ongoing conflicts, communication issues, or difficulties in your relationships with family, friends, or romantic partners, therapy can help promote healthier connections.

    • Unhealthy behavioural patterns: If you find yourself engaging in self-destructive behaviours like substance abuse, self-harm, or excessive avoidance, therapy can assist in addressing and changing these patterns.

    • Overwhelming stress and burnout: If you feel constantly overwhelmed, stressed, or burnt out due to work, school, or other responsibilities, therapy can teach stress management techniques and help you establish healthy boundaries.

    • Persistent negative thoughts or low self-esteem: If you have a negative self-image, struggle with self-worth, or experience persistent self-criticism, therapy can assist in shifting negative thought patterns and promoting self-acceptance.

    • Trauma or past unresolved issues: If you have experienced a traumatic event or have unresolved emotional wounds from the past, therapy can provide a safe space to process and heal from these experiences.

    • Lack of motivation or purpose: If you're feeling stuck, lacking direction, or experiencing a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed, therapy can help you rediscover motivation and find a sense of purpose.

Remember, seeking therapy doesn't mean you're "broken" or weak. It's a courageous step towards self-care and personal growth. If you're unsure, feel free to connect with me for a complimentary 20-minute session to see if we're the right fit and explore your needs.

  • No, therapy is not only for people with diagnosed mental health conditions. While therapy is commonly associated with mental health treatment, it can benefit many people facing various life challenges. Therapy is for anyone who seeks support, guidance, personal growth, or assistance in navigating difficult emotions, relationships, life transitions, or self-exploration.

Therapy provides a safe and confidential space for people to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences, regardless of whether they have a specific diagnosis. It can help individuals gain self-awareness, develop coping skills, improve communication, build resilience, and enhance overall well-being.

Therapy is a flexible tool that can address various concerns, such as stress, relationship issues, grief, self-esteem, personal growth, life adjustments, and more. It offers an opportunity to work with a trained professional who can provide support, guidance, and evidence-based techniques tailored to a person's unique needs and goals.

Remember, seeking therapy does not require a specific diagnosis or a severe mental health condition. It is a proactive step towards self-care and personal development, allowing you to gain insights, acquire tools, and find support in various aspects of your life.

  • The duration of therapy can vary greatly depending on several factors, including your specific needs, the nature of the issues being addressed, the type of therapy being used, and the progress made in therapy. That means that no fixed timeframe applies to all therapy sessions. I work collaboratively with my clients to determine the duration of therapy based on their progress and goals. It's important to remember that therapy is a highly individualized process and can vary depending on the complexity of the issues being addressed and your circumstances.

Ultimately, the duration of therapy is a decision made between you and the therapist, and it can be adjusted as needed throughout the therapeutic journey.

  • This depends on your reasons for coming to therapy. I will see some of my clients every week and others on a bi-weekly basis. I also have some clients who see me monthly. After two sessions, we will discuss the frequency of appointments depending on your needs.

  • In your first therapy session, you can expect a warm welcome where I will strive to make you feel comfortable and heard. We will begin by discussing confidentiality and the boundaries of our therapeutic relationship, ensuring that you understand the privacy of our sessions. I encourage you to share your concerns, thoughts, and goals for therapy while actively listening and providing support.

During this session, we will explore your background, history, and challenges to understand your unique situation better. Together, we will work on setting goals that align with your desired outcomes, tailoring the therapy to address your specific needs. I will explain the therapeutic approach I intend to use and how it can help you achieve those goals.

  • Therapy is generally confidential, and therapists are legally and ethically bound to maintain client confidentiality. This means the information you share in therapy sessions is protected and cannot be disclosed to others without your consent. Confidentiality helps create a safe and trusting environment for open and honest discussions.

However, there are a few exceptions to confidentiality that you should be aware of:

    • Harm to self or others: If you express a serious intent to harm yourself or others, therapists are obligated to take appropriate actions to ensure safety. This may involve breaking confidentiality to prevent harm.

    • Child or elder abuse: If a therapist has reasonable suspicion or evidence of child or elder abuse, they are legally required to report it to the appropriate child protective services or adult protective services agency.

    • Court-ordered disclosure: In some legal situations, a court may issue a subpoena or order requesting the release of therapy records or testimony. In such cases, therapists may be legally obligated to comply.

Before starting therapy, I discuss confidentiality and its limitations with all my clients. I am happy to answer any questions to help you feel more comfortable and informed about the privacy and confidentiality of your therapy sessions.

I can provide support and guide you toward recovery through evidence-based interventions and personalized treatment approaches.

A skilled therapist can guide and support you toward improved mental and emotional well-being.

  • It is critically important that we are the right fit for each other! The relationship between myself and my clients is crucial for my client's growth and development. That's why I like to meet with all of my clients for a 20-minute complimentary "fit" session to ensure we are the right match for each other. Several factors should be considered when choosing the right therapist, including evaluating your specific needs, checking credentials and specialization, exploring therapeutic approaches and assessing compatibility. It's important to reflect on what you want to address in therapy, gauge compatibility and comfort, and consider logistics such as location and fees. Remember, the therapeutic relationship is crucial, so trust your instincts.

  • A psychotherapist is a professional who specializes in providing therapy and mental health treatment. The title "psychotherapist" itself is not regulated in every province or territory in Canada, so qualifications and requirements may differ. In Ontario, psychotherapists are regulated through the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). Many psychotherapists hold Masters or Ph.D. degrees in psychology, counselling psychology, or clinical social work. They are trained to assess and provide therapy for individuals, couples and families experiencing mental health concerns, emotional difficulties, or relationship issues. Psychotherapists in Ontario are not permitted to diagnose mental health concerns, and this is only done by psychologists, psychiatrists, or a family physician.

Social workers either have a Bachelors or Masters's of Social Work and provide support, counselling, and advocacy services, addressing various aspects of a person's life, including social, environmental, and systemic factors. Depending on their training and qualifications, social workers may also provide psychotherapy as part of their practice.

In Ontario, a psychologist is a regulated healthcare professional who has obtained a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in psychology from a recognized university program. Psychologists are licensed by the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO) and adhere to their professional and ethical standards. Psychologists in Ontario are trained to assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of mental health issues and psychological disorders. They utilize evidence-based therapies and interventions to help individuals, couples, families, and groups navigate emotional, behavioural, and cognitive challenges.

Couples Therapy FAQs

  • Couples therapy is a safe space where your relationship can come alive, and partners find comfort in facing challenges, taking responsibility, and growing together. I provide couples therapy that explores the power dynamics in your relationship, uncovering the stories, patterns, and wounds that shape it. With my compassionate guidance, we'll uncover hidden layers, let go of harmful patterns, and create a more authentic way of being. You'll learn effective communication, deepen intimacy, and develop the skills to navigate life's challenges.

  • While the results of therapy are always dependent on the specific couple, research has shown that couples therapy can greatly benefit relationships by improving communication, resolving conflicts, and rebuilding trust. A therapist helps couples develop healthier communication patterns, teaches conflict resolution techniques, and guides the process of healing and rebuilding trust if it has been damaged. Additionally, couples therapy focuses on strengthening emotional connection, managing life transitions, and addressing issues related to intimacy and connection. It provides a supportive environment for partners to gain insight, acquire new skills, and develop a happier and more fulfilling relationship.

  • Generally, most couples therapy sessions last for 80 minutes. Sometimes, a couple may want or need more intensive sessions arranged through Kathleen directly.

  • This is a very common occurrence. When couples come to couples therapy, one person in the couple may be more enthusiastic about therapy than the other. In some cases, one member of the couple will not attend couples therapy. It is absolutely still worth it to come on your own! Individual therapy can address many concerns in the relationship and can help you gain clarity on the next steps and your future.

  • Therapy can be highly effective in addressing relationship issues by offering the following benefits:

    • Identifying underlying patterns: Couples therapy can uncover deep-rooted patterns and dynamics within relationships. It helps individuals recognize their contributions to relationship challenges and understand how childhood wounds and past experiences influence their behaviours and interactions.

    • Empowering individuals and couples: Therapy can empower individuals to take responsibility for their growth and change within the relationship. It encourages personal accountability and self-awareness, helping individuals break free from destructive patterns and develop healthier relationship habits.

    • Improving communication skills: The couples therapy that I offer emphasizes effective communication techniques to foster better understanding and connection. It teaches couples how to express their needs, listen actively, and engage in respectful dialogue, enhancing communication and reducing conflicts.

    • Healing and rebuilding trust: I provide a framework for healing relationship wounds and rebuilding trust, and I guide couples through the process of addressing betrayals, hurts, and breaches of trust, helping partners regain a sense of safety and rebuilding the foundation of their relationship.

    • Promoting emotional intimacy: I help foster emotional intimacy between partners in couples therapy. It encourages vulnerability, empathy, and authentic connection, helping couples deepen their emotional bond and cultivate a stronger sense of intimacy.

    • Addressing power imbalances: In the therapeutic model I use, I pay special attention to power dynamics within relationships and work towards establishing healthier balance and equality. It helps couples navigate control, dominance, and submission issues, fostering mutual respect and shared decision-making.

    • Developing relational mindfulness: I incorporate mindfulness practices to enhance couples' awareness of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours within the relationship. Individuals become more attuned to their partner's needs and emotions by cultivating relational mindfulness, promoting empathy and connection.

Coaching FAQs

  • Coaching helps individuals reach their goals by clarifying objectives, creating actionable plans, providing support and motivation, identifying strengths and overcoming limitations, enhancing self-awareness and mindset, developing skills and strategies, and celebrating achievements. Through a collaborative and empowering approach, coaches guide individuals in staying focused, accountable, and motivated while offering valuable resources and tools for personal and professional growth.

  • Coaching focuses on helping individuals achieve personal or professional goals like career, relationships, or lifestyle. It's for people who are already doing well psychologically but want support in reaching their desired outcomes. Therapy, on the other hand, is for those facing emotional challenges or mental health difficulties. It explores past experiences, emotions, and deep-seated issues to promote healing and personal growth. Therapy takes a more reflective approach, uncovering underlying issues and using various therapeutic techniques to address emotional challenges and develop problem-solving skills. In Ontario, therapy is regulated through the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). Coaching is regulated.

The choice between coaching and therapy depends on your needs and goals. Coaching is for goal-oriented support, while therapy is for addressing emotional challenges and promoting healing and personal growth, and can also support reaching your goals. Since I am both a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) and an Associate Certified Coach (ACC) with the International Coaching Federation (ICF), I will use coaching tools in my therapy sessions. But since therapy is regulated in Ontario, I will not use therapeutic interventions with my coaching clients.

It's important to note that these roles may overlap, and there can be collaborative relationships between coaches and psychotherapists. In some cases, people may benefit from both psychotherapy and coaching.
